About Marsabit National Park

Marsabit National Park is located in northern Kenya and covers the area surrounding the extinct Marsabit Volcano. The park spans a large forested massif rising sharply from the surrounding dry plains, creating a cool and moist microclimate that supports dense forests, bamboo groves, and streams. This unique environment contrasts sharply with the semi-arid lands around it. Established in 1949, the park protects approximately 1505 square kilometers of habitat that is home to a diverse range of wildlife including elephants, with the park being a well-known elephant sanctuary, as well as buffalo, olive baboons, vervet monkeys, and numerous bird species such as the rare eastern black-headed oriole and pangani waxbill. The forested landscape also supports several species of snakes and reptiles. Visitors to Marsabit can explore crater lakes, waterfalls, and hot springs scattered around the crater rim, making it a fascinating destination for nature lovers. Key attractions include the Marsabit town ruins, the Lolkuniani or Sibiloi rock paintings, and the breathtaking views from the crater edge. While the park is remote and less visited than Kenya’s more famous parks, this adds to its appeal for travelers seeking solitude in nature and authentic wildlife experiences. Birdwatching and hiking are popular activities, and the moderate climate allows for year-round visitation. The park is also an important cultural area for the indigenous Rendille people, adding a cultural dimension to visits.
